Holding space for sacred transitions & moving through thresholds

Repair matters. Remembrance may take us even deepe Repair matters. Remembrance may take us even deeper.

In "The Medicine You Carry", Amel is joined by Farzana Khan, Executive Director of Healing Justice London, social sculptor and writer, for a conversation about what healing asks of us now.

Farzana reminds us that repair is sacred work. There has been harm. There has been separation. There are ruptures in our bodies, our communities, our lineages, and our ways of living with the earth.

And still, remembrance offers a generous frame.

Because so much of what we are reaching for was not invented yesterday. Many ancestral practices already knew how to hold body and spirit together, matter and soul together, healing and community together.

Systems of domination taught separation.
Remembrance helps us return.

To the dignity that was always native to us.
To the belonging no system can grant or take away.
To the truth that none of us are disposable.
To the medicine we carry for ourselves, for each other, and for the worlds longing to emerge.

May this conversation meet the part of you that is tired of proving your place.
May it help you remember that belonging is inherent.
May it return you to something older, wiser, and alive within you.

Listen to "The Medicine You Carry" with Farzana Khan wherever you find the podcast, and share it with someone who may need this reminder today.

On Belonging

None of us are disposable.

Not in our grief.
Not in our becoming.
Not in the places where systems of power have tried to name who belongs and who does not.

In this conversation with Farzana Khan, there is a deeper remembering:

Belonging is not granted.
It is not permission handed down from power.
It is not something we earn by being useful, palatable, productive, or easy to understand.

Belonging is inherent.

We come with lineage.
We come with memory in the body.
We come carrying medicine for ourselves, for each other, and for the worlds longing to emerge through us.

Farzana reminds us that repair matters, but remembrance can sometimes be more generous.

Because remembrance says:
This was never lost forever.
This dignity is native to you.
This place in the circle was always yours.

May this episode return you to the medicine you carry.

What part of your belonging are you ready to remember?

What must we refuse to lose as we adapt? This que What must we refuse to lose as we adapt?

This question has been sitting with me as AI, automation, platforms, tools, and new ways of being online move through our lives with such speed.

There is so much pressure to keep up.

Learn the tool.
Build the presence.
Follow the algorithm.
Move faster.
Say more.
Become visible.
Become efficient.
Adapt, or risk being left behind.

And of course, adaptation matters.

We are living through change. We cannot pretend we are not. Technology can open doors, carry stories further, connect people across distance, and support work that once took much longer.

But adaptation is not neutral.

If we adapt unconsciously, we may start to lose things quietly.

Our attention.
Our patience.
Our agency.
Our depth.
Our ability to listen.
Our relationship with the body.
Our capacity to stay with a question without rushing to solve it.

We may begin to mistake speed for wisdom.
Visibility for connection.
Content for conversation.
Information for transformation.

And in the world of healing, creativity, leadership, and inner work, this feels important to name.

Some things need time.

A grief that hasn't found language yet.
A creative impulse that is still forming.
A body learning to trust again.
A relationship asking for repair.
A question that may need years before it reveals what it came to teach us.

Refusal, then, does not have to mean refusing change.

It can mean refusing to abandon what makes change life-giving.

Refusing to lose tenderness.
Refusing to lose discernment.
Refusing to lose the slow work of becoming.
Refusing to let the machine set the pace of the soul.

Maybe the task is not to choose between technology and humanity.

Maybe the task is to adapt in ways that protect our aliveness.

To use the tools without becoming tools ourselves.
To stay reachable without becoming endlessly available.
To participate without surrendering our attention, our bodies, our imagination, or our capacity for real relationship.

So I am asking this gently, as much to myself as to anyone reading:

What is one human capacity you are refusing to lose as you adapt?

Farzana Khan names 2 things this moment is asking of us: become prayerful and become playful.

Not prayerful as performance.
Not prayerful as certainty.
Not prayerful as dogma.

Prayerful as humility.
As awe.
As the willingness to be right sized by what is older and wiser than us.

The trees.
The land.
The water.
The ancestors.
The quiet knowing beneath the noise.

To be prayerful is to listen before we act.
To remember we don't have all the answers.
To enter relationship with life as something sacred, alive, and speaking.

And then there is playfulness.

Not play as escape.
Not play as turning away from grief, conflict, or responsibility.

Play as creativity.
Play as courage.
Play as connection.
Play as the practice of shaping new realities before they make sense to everyone else.

Farzana reminds us that if we are dreaming ourselves into different ways of living, we cannot do that from the old shapes alone.

We need song.
We need movement.
We need risk.
We need the strange and holy willingness to believe that something impossible may still be possible.

This conversation with Farzana Khan, Executive Director of Healing Justice London, social sculptor and writer, is an invitation into that spacious place where prayer and play meet.

Where humility becomes hope.
Where imagination becomes practice.
Where remembrance becomes a way of returning to life.

What helps you become more prayerful and playful?

This august, I walked toward the heart. I arrived This august, I walked toward the heart.

I arrived at Medicine Festival with an intention that had been forming since the summer solstice, fed by quiet moments, encounters, and a longing gathering in my body.

This year’s theme was “Walking Together: A Pilgrimage to the Heart.”

It spoke to me before I arrived.

I came with dear friends, which made returning to the land feel even more precious. In the days before, I had been full of energy, choosing ceremonies, music, movement, and spaces I wanted to enter.

Then we landed.
And almost nothing worked as planned.

The heat delayed things. The extreme heat asked me to stop negotiating with my body and listen.

What began as structure became surrender.

And somehow, what I could never have planned was what my soul needed most.

I softened through encounters with other humans. Through ceremony. Through music. Through wisdom keepers. Through the quiet intelligence of the land.

Water was everywhere, even in its absence.

The earth felt thirsty. Our bodies felt thirsty. There was a longing for more water.

And water came through ceremony, through collective prayer, through bodies moving like waves, through 11,000 people walking toward love, toward heart, toward the humanity we are still learning how to remember.

Play, beauty were everywhere too.

Costumes. Colour. Body paint. Mud on skin. Crowns made from leaves and twigs. Bodies moving as temples, gods, goddesses, beings worthy of rhythm, pleasure, care, and devotion.

And as I left, I realised I had met someone I have often found hard to access.

Sensual Amel.

The Amel who feels through the skin.
The Amel who can soften, melt, move as if her body has no bones.
The Amel who doesn't have to hold herself so tightly to be safe.

More permeability.
More desire to move toward people, toward life, toward a heart that feels both still and vibrant.

I am grateful for the land, the organisers, the medicine offered, the friends who walked with me, and everyone who came to commune in that way.

I am still receiving it.
Still walking with it.

What has helped you walk back toward your heart this summer?

What if the medicine this moment needs is already What if the medicine this moment needs is already moving through you?

In this new episode of Dreaming Ourselves Alive, Amel is joined by Farzana Khan, Executive Director of Healing Justice London, social sculptor and writer.

Together, they enter a conversation that feels less like an interview and more like a remembering.

A remembering that each of us carries medicine.

That belonging is not something a system can grant or take away.

That repair may begin with reverence.
That being prayerful does not have to mean dogma, but can mean humility, awe, and deep listening.

That this moment may not only be asking us to act, but to attune.

Farzana speaks of listening to the trees, the land, the water, the ancestors, and to what is longing to emerge through us.

She invites us into prayerfulness and playfulness.
Into collective healing.
Into the slow, brave work of remembering ourselves as part of life.

May this conversation meet you gently.
May it return something to you.
May it help you listen for the medicine you carry.

Listen to The Medicine You Carry with Farzana Khan wherever you find the podcast.

Save this for a moment when you need to remember that you belong to something deeper.
