Holding space for sacred transitions & moving through thresholds

I keep returning to this simple idea: We are what I keep returning to this simple idea:

We are what we practice.

Not what we intend.

Not what we promise.

Not even what we believe.

What we practice.

It's easy to say we want healing, care, community, or belonging.

The harder question is whether our daily choices, habits, relationships, and systems actually support those things.

This clip from my conversation with Topher Wilkins explores that tension beautifully.

It's an invitation to pause and ask:

What am I practicing into existence?

What part of the blueprint do you feel called to c What part of the blueprint do you feel called to carry?

It's a question Topher Wilkins leaves us with in this episode of Dreaming Ourselves Alive.

And honestly, I haven't stopped thinking about it.

In times of uncertainty, it's easy to focus on what's breaking down.

This conversation invites us to focus on what is trying to emerge.

Not everyone carries the same piece of the future.

And perhaps that's the point.

The invitation isn't to do everything.

It's to discover your part.

And to find the others whose paths are meant to weave with yours.

A caterpillar does not grow wings. It dissolves entirely, into something scientists call cellular soup, before certain cells find each other and begin building something new.

That is where this week's conversation with Topher Wilkins begins, and it does not stay there. We talk about what happens when a movement, or a community, or a life, is somewhere inside that same dissolution right now.

"Leaders need to heal, human beings need to heal. "Leaders need to heal, human beings need to heal. And somebody said... we must work on ourselves to heal us, because if we don't, we get to bleed on people who never cut us in the first place." Caren Wakoli

She says this quietly. Almost gently. And it lands like a weight.

Because we have all been in rooms with someone who was bleeding. And we may have been that person without knowing it.

Caren goes further. She says every parent carries trauma. Some have done the work so it does not pass to their children. Some have not, and it moves forward, generation to generation, quietly shaping lives that never asked for it.

Her invitation is not accusation. It is one of the most compassionate things she says in this entire conversation.

"Take time to examine yourself, whatever that looks like, whether it's through painting, art, music, therapy, nature, prayer, meditation, whatever it is. Take time to just examine yourself."Caren Wakoli

The Offer She Refused On values, dignity, and what The Offer She Refused
On values, dignity, and what you are really building when you build anything

In 2016, Caren Wakoli and her colleagues, all volunteers, responded to over 50 calls for proposals. They received a handful of responses.

Two said the budget was too small. One asked for a 10% kickback. And one said something she had not prepared herself for.

"Actually, you could give me sex and I'll give you the money." — Caren Wakoli

She sat with that. And then she said no.

"I am building an institution that is built and based on values, grounded on values where we dignify and we value every human being. Engaging in affairs or corruption... then really what kind of a foundation am I building my organization on? Like it's faulty from the word go." — Caren Wakoli

What she held onto in that moment, and what kept her going after it, is something I think every person building something values-led needs to hear.

On healing, love as action, and what happens when On healing, love as action, and what happens when you finally speak what you cannot carry.

Caren Wakoli told me about a night in Nairobi when she had been running between consultancies all day, carrying a family, an organisation, and a dream, and finally stopped on the street with tears rolling down her face.

She said a short prayer. Then she went home and did something I was not expecting.

"I wrote an official letter to God. You know, the official letter where you write the address to the sender, the receiver's address, the date, the reference." — Caren Wakoli

The reference line read: "Tired of running like headless chicken."

She still has it in her journal.

Earlier in the same conversation, she spoke about love not as something you give from surplus, but as the force that moves through people and between them when they choose abundance over scarcity.

"If I can love on somebody and they can love on somebody else, we pay it forward and society becomes better and we get to heal each other as a people." — Caren Wakoli

What happened after that letter, and what those years of difficulty actually built in her, is in the full episode.
